Last gasp Barbarians stop Knights charge…

sbrlfc news

Scunthorpe Barbarians 36 Lincoln City Knights 34

On a wet rainy day, with a new fortress to protect at John Leggot College Scunthorpe were hoping to celebrate with a victory over their local rivals Lincoln.

The match started very evenly with both sides breaking the gain line and completing their sets of 6 tackles.

After just six minutes Scunthorpe’s intent was shown as Gavin Draper was unlucky to of been adjudged to of been in touch as he grounded the ball.

As Lincoln pressed Gavin Kempthorne and Ryan Eades repelled the attacks by ferociously tackling their opponents knocking them back on every occasion.

After 10 minutes good work on the right sucked the defence in allowing Gaz Phillips to take a short ball from Ben Pearson, hitting a great line to go over Ian Lee adding the extras 6-0.

Scunthorpe were soon attacking again, with Kempthorne making a great break from inside his own half he was stopped 10 yard short by the scrambling Lincoln defence. This didn’t prevent the try as the ball was recycled to Pearson for him to put in a great crossfield kick which was gathered in by Kepa Paaka, who stepped inside selling the dummy to the would be Lincoln defenders going over under the posts. Lee again added the conversion 12-0

Lincoln weren’t done by a long shot and came back with 2 quick scores converting one 12-10.

Scunthorpe had certainly gone to sleep and Lincoln were in ascendency adding another score to take a slender lead 12-14.

Scunthorpe galvanised and went back at Lincoln with a great break by Pearson who offloaded to Goodison who still had plenty to do but went over in the corner to give Scunthorpe the lead back 16-14.

On the stroke of half time Pearson turned receiver following a good break by the sides talisman Jones, Pearson squirmed over for a score with again Lee adding the extras. 22-14.

Lincoln must have been given the proverbial hair dryer treatment as they came out with much more aggression and will to win this was shown as Lincoln first scored an intercept and then went on to score 2 others with just 10 minutes into the second half.

Luckily the Lincoln kicker had left his boots at home only converting one but still gave them a healthy 8 point lead. 22-30.

With Scunthorpe having conceded 16 unanswered points, coach Daintith was left cursing his luck as not only did the heavens open but the somewhat keen referee saw what he believed to be two yellow card offences within two minutes and sent both Pearson and Paaka to the sin bin for high tackle and a second attempt at a tackle respectively.

With only 11 men on the field Scunthorpe had to step up and defend bigger and better than they had all game, not only did they not concede Kempthorne broke through the line following good work from Phillips and Eades, Kempthorne sprinted 70 metres from his own half to score under the posts which Lee converted 28-30.

Time was running out and Lincoln gained a penalty in a kickable position which they decided to go for the 2 points, the kick was duly despatched but only gave them a 4 point lead. Scunthorpe knew this and had to go for the try.

Back to a full compliment of players chances were few and far between as the weather played its toll and handling errors became more prevalent. The next score was probably going to win the game and as time was running out Scunthorpe gave up 2 chances through handling errors.

Scunthorpe were inside there own half with a mere 30 secs left the ball was recycled and taken forward, eventually coming to Will Scupham who broke through the first tackle, stepped inside and went over under the posts, the kick was converted by Clayton giving Scunthorpe the win by the closest of majorities and a potential coronary to the on looking coaches.

Scunthorpe did improve on last weeks outing, but there are still many things for the coaching team to work on.

Man of the Match – Gavin Kempthorne

Gamebreaker – Will Scuphams last minute try, which broke Lincoln hearts.

Training takes place opposite John Leggott college Wednesday at 6.45pm, and the Barbarians face last years league winners Parkside Hawks on Saturday at John Leggott college 2.30pm kick off. All welcome to both.

Barbarians go top as Akkies pillaged.

sbrlfc news

Rugby League Conference North Midlands Division

Ashby Decoy, 13th June 2009

Scunthorpe Barbarians moved to the top of the RLC North Midlands Division, as they ran in the biggest victory in their 3 year history, as they completed a 16 try victory against Leeds Akkies at Ashby Decoy on Saturday.

The Barbarians previous biggest win, a 70-20 victory against Nottingham Outlaws a fortnight previously was eclipsed by the rout, as the combined tutelage of coaches Ian Daintith and Nigel Dyer had its desired effect.

Naming a side with a few changes from last weeks victory against Rotherham, due to player unavailability and injury, the Barbarians started strongly, with strong tackling not letting the visitors make any headway.

The hosts probed the visiting defence with every set of tackles, and it was with 6 minutes on the clock that Lewis Jones ran in the opening try, making the most of an overlap on the right wing to touch down to the right of the posts for a try which was converted by Karl Clayton.
The Barbarians didn’t waste time in getting on the scoreboard again, with Gavin Kempthorne getting loose of the last man on the halfway line, and romping home for his first try of the season.

Leeds applied a little bit of pressure for the next 5 minutes of the game, nearly sneaking over on the right hand side, but excellent defence from the hosts prevented any points being scored.
A mistake from the visitors on the last tackle was to produce the next try, Leeds failed to find touch with a kick on the last tackle, and Karl Clayton was on hand to sneak through a tiny gap between the Leeds winger and the touchline to run 45 yards to score a try which he converted to make it 16-0 after as many minutes.
Supporters of the home side didn’t have long to wait to cheer another score, as Shane O’Sullivan received the ball from the kick off, and after snaking his way through the defensive line, ran untouched to the tryline to score under the posts.

Another period of end to end rugby, with both sides making errors when it was easier to score was ended on 31 minutes, when Gareth Mist found himself in the right place at the right time to take a kick in his own half, and trotted away up the hill to score a try that defied belief for the big man.
The home side didn’t have to wait long to score again, as, following breaks from O’Sullivan and Johnson, Karl Clayton was on hand to score his second try of the game, and his teams last try of the half, ducking under a tackle to score within touching distance of the posts for a try which he converted.

Half time 34-0

The pattern of play in the second half was almost identical to the second half, but the hosts scored with their first possession, Lewis Jones beating 4 men round the outside to run in for his second try of the game. For the second time in the game, the hosts next try was instantaneous, with Duncan Henderson finding the ball on halfway after the kick off had been run back strongly by John Williams, and the veteran hooker running in untouched to push the points total nearer to 50.

David Johnson was on hand after 50 minutes to finish an excellent team move on the last tackle, to take the total to 50. Ian Lee and Lewis Jones working hard to provide the ball for the winger to run the last 15 yards to the tryline, Karl Clayton missed the conversion from the right hand side.

Clayton was on hand 5 minutes later to complete his hat trick, beating 2 Akkies defenders to run in from 35 yards, despite having 3 Barbarians attackers outside him on the overlap. He converted his own try to take his personal total for the day to 28 points, equalling Tom Alldridges club record, set during the Scunthorpe Braves days. It was to be his last action of the day, as he left the pitch shortly afterwards.

On 60 minutes, club captain Lewis Jones completed his hat trick, picking up a loose ball in his own half, before beating the Leeds full back to score under the posts. Ian Lee converted the try to take the total past 60. Five minutes later, it was that man Jones on hand again to score his 4th try of the game, a carbon copy of his previous one, picking up a loose ball in his own half to run in untouched for another converted try.
The next try was to be the best try of the game, with props Gareth Mist and Phil Jepson linking up, with the latter showing a glimpse of his days in the backs to romp home untouched from the halfway line.

Prop Gaz Phillips, who had come on for previous try scorer Phil Jepson a matter of moments beforehand, was on hand to finish an excellent team move with 13 minutes left on the clock, breaking through several would be tacklers to touch down underneath the posts.

For the 3rd time in the game, the next try came straight from the kick off, Lewis Jones finding a gap in the line to exploit before he broke through and ran in from well inside his own half to break John Woolards 4 year old tries in a game record, making the new mark 5 tries.

With just over 5 minutes left, Gaz Phillips brought the scoring to an end, breaking 3 tackles as he went in to the try line following good work by Danny Cribbis in the centres.

Full time score 90-0

Tries – Lewis Jones 5, Karl Clayton 3, Gaz Phillips 2, Gavin Kempthorne, David Johnson, Phil Jepson, Shane O’Sullivan, Dunc Henderson, Gareth Mist
Conversions – Karl Clayton 8, Ian Lee 5

Barbarians fell Giants with Last Gasp Try.

sbrlfc news

Scunthorpe Barbarians maintained their 4 match unbeaten run, with a last gasp victory against a Rotherham Giants side that should have been despatched a lot easier and earlier.

It was a game where both defences were on top form, and this was proven
with the fact that it took 20 minutes for the home side to get their
first score. It came with Daz Williams bounding over from close range,
creating havoc in the Rotherham defence, carrying two would be tacklers
over with him. Jason Eagles then added a second a short time afterwards,
making the decision to run for the tryline on the last tackle, despite
the fact he had men supporting on either side, and ducked a tackle to score.

Five minutes before half time, Rotherham cut the defecit to just one
try, with a converted try of their own.

Many observers stated that this was the best half of rugby seen at Ashby
Decoy all season.

Half time score – 10-6

If the first halfs rugby was entertaining, then the second could only be
described as tense. The Barbarians opened the scoring with Karl Clayton
charging in for the try following an excellent break from his own half
from winger Rewiti Vaimoso, Clayton converted to put the home team 10
points up.

Another try wasn’t that far off, with Lewis Jones being in the right
place to find a gaping hole in the visitors defence to touch down to one
side for a great team worked try.

If it seemed to be plain sailing for the hosts, then the effort from the
Rotherham team was to prove otherwise, scoring 3 tries in less than 10
minutes to close the gap to 2 points.

The visitors then scored, what they believed to be a winning try, going
over on the left hand side to put them 2 points in front with only 90
seconds left, but, visiting hearts were broken, as with time running
out, the Barbarians worked a two on one overlap, and David Johnson made
the most of the space, touching down in the corner to win the game. Karl
Clayton converted from the touchline to seal the win.

Final Score – 26 – 22

Tries – D.Williams, J.Eagles, K.Clayton, L.Jones, D.Johnson
Goals – K.Clayton – 3/5

========================================

The Barbarians ‘A’ team returned to winning ways prior to the first team
match, with a first half hat trick from Mark Stow along with a tries
from Nathan Clark and Tom Parkinson putting them 28-10 up at half time
against Barton Bulldogs. Second half tries from Mark Nottingham, Craig
Wingfield, Roy Mould, and another pair from Clark (giving him his hat
trick) took the hosts past 50 points for the first time in the league
this season, as they wound up 52-14 winners.

The Barbarians RLC side are at home in the league this weekend, with

Barbarians Repel Outlaws Raid.

sbrlfc news

Scunthorpe Barbarians maintained their pursuit of top of the table Parkside Hawks, as they ran in 13 tries in a 70-20 victory over Nottingham Outlaws at Ashby Decoy.

It couldn’t have got any better for the home side, as an opening effort from Danny Cribbis, followed by a brace from David Johnson, and a try from John Williams set the initial tone, before a 60 metre solo break from Dave Garbutt was cooly finished by the big prop forward, as he beat 4 defenders on his way to the line.

Cribbis picked up his second try, following a flowing move through the backs after the home side had kept a period of sustained pressure on the visitors try line, before Ian Lee and James Wade put the Barbarians to the 40 point marker, scored at quicker than a point a minute.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the hosts, as the Outlaws ran in a converted try shortly before half time.

Half Time Score – 40-6.

The second half saw Nottingham open the scoring with an unconverted try, before Simon O’Sullivan opened the 2nd half scoring for the hosts with a converted try.

The visitors responded with another try, closing the gap slightly, before Scunthorpe grabbed hold of the tie once more.

A try from Jason Eagles took the score past the 50 point mark for the hosts, before Will Scupham and Gaz Phillips pushed the score even further past the 60 point mark, each scoring a try converted by Tom Alldridge.

Nottingham then scored their final try of the game, which seemed to come via a knock on in the build up, before Mark Sherwood completed the hosts scoring in the final 5 minutes with a try that was converted by Tom Alldridge.

Match Report – Leeds Akkies (A)

sbrlfc news

Scunthorpe Barbarians started their 2nd season in the RLC Yorkshire & Lincolnshire division, with a dominent away win against Leeds Akkies.

With 6 players making their debuts for the Barbarians in what is recognised as the toughest group in the Rugby League Conference, the Barbarians ran away and confirmed their first win with a comprehensive 1st half lead of 26 points. The Barbarians under the tutelage of Coaches Nige Dyer & Ian Daintith, dominated the opening exchanges, and stamped their authority with a typical scampering run by Lewis Jones. The captain, after great forward pressure and offload, attacked the Leeds line, and weaved his way around the scrambling players to score under the sticks after 6 mins. Tom Alldridge kicked the easy conversion 0 – 6.

Playing against the wind in the first half, the Barbarians kept their focus on simple but hard rugby league, and after a great hit on a Leeds forward, possession was turned over to the Barbarians. They then proceeded to switch the play to the wing, and after great passing, Chris Redmile danced in to score on 12 mins in the corner. Conversion missed 0 – 10.

Straight from the kickoff, John Williams, Will Scopham and Jason Eagles the debut forwards for Scunthorpe, began to break through some stiff defence from the Leeds players, and create a platform for the talented and speedy backs. After more pressure on the Leeds line, Dunc Henderson offloaded to Chris Redmile, and the winger squeezed over by the posts. Tom Alldridge kicked the conversion 0 – 16.

After a couple of sets of possession, Leeds started to gain some composure and field position, but the disciplined and hardened Scunthorpe defence held firm. A strong boot up field on 5th tackle saw the Leeds Fullback spill the ball for Shane O Sullivan to recover, after a couple of plays, Dunc Henderson deservedly got his rewards, and the Hooker twisted his way over on 25 mins after a great offload by John Williams. Tom Alldridge kicked again the conversion 0 – 22.

10 minutes later Scunthorpe showed that they can not only produce great forward power, but decided to open the playbook, which resulted in a wide out try for Tom Alldridge, who then with the wind increasing missed his own conversion. 0 – 26.
Half Time 0 – 26.

With the ferocious wind in the second half half making handling difficult, both teams struggled to create any decent possession, and it took until the 60th minute before the Barbarians increased their lead. After superb switching of the ball from one side to the other, Mark Sherwood drove in, and allowed fullback Ian Lee to score on the left flank. Conversion missed 0 – 30.

Scunthorpe then began to drop off the tackles and become sloppy. Which is understandable after playing a friendly on Wednesday evening against near neighbours South Humber Rabbitohs in Grimsby; which they won easily 16 – 48.

Then after some creating work, the Leeds team scored 2 quick tries in under 4 minutes, with some help from a ragged Barbarians defence, the Akkies kicked one of the conversions to make the score 10 – 30.

The Barbarians then started to regroup and after solid teamwork throughout, Darren Williams crashed over to score on 73 minutes. The conversion was missed 10 – 34.

With a storm moving in, and a little help from the referee, the Leeds Akkies had the final say right on full time, with a scrappy score from close range. Conversion missed, fulltime 14 – 34.
